Sappy Time

I've never been one who's been very emotional, I'm more of a take things as they come and deal with it type person. However I've noticed that becoming a mom has softened me up quite a bit. I now feel much more emotional.. I'm sure some of it is due to the hormones, but I think mostly it's just that I'm a mom now. I'm devoting all of my time and energy into caring for this amazing little baby that God knit together in my womb.... the baby that I wondered about and dreamt about meeting for 9 months. He is just so sweet and easy to love. I guess I'm glad that I've softened up a bit, it's good to embrace the tender moments of life as they are so sweet and can pass by so quickly. I'm trying to enjoy each moment in the present and not think about the ones to come, as they will be here before I know it.

I have to say it's been pretty amazing to become a mom. I knew I would love Ethan, but I didn't know what it would feel like. I feel like I would do anything for him. I just stare at him in wonder and awe. I can cuddle with him for hours. It's also been amazing to watch Matt become a dad. He is so sweet with Ethan. He loves on Ethan all evening long as soon as he gets home from work. He changes lots of diapers, he does 4:00 am feedings for me on the weekends, and cares for our son with such a sweet tenderness. It melts my heart :)
Here is what Ethan is doing as I write this. He's not in a deep sleep... he keeps grunting, it's funny. Yesterday when he was sleeping he was "air nursing". It was hilarious.

Thanksgiving & The Day After

We had a nice Thanksgiving. Unfortunately we were a bit tired because Ethan decided to be fussy a lot the night before, but we were still in good spirits. I had made 2 pumpkin pies on Wednesday night, and being that pumpkin pie is my favorite, well I just couldn't resist having a slice. They looked lovely (and of course I made the crust from scratch too), so I served Matt and I small slice. We bit in... and it just didn't taste good. I realized I had forgotten to add the sugar :( I was SO MAD at myself... ugh! I guess that's what happens when you try to bake and you're a little sleep deprived... haha. Thus, Thanksgiving morning Matt went back to the store to get more ingredients, and we made 2 more pumpkin pies. This time I remembered the sugar and they tasted delicious. We went over to Matt's parents house at 1:00 and had a delicious meal. It was just us, his parents, and an aunt and uncle. Ethan did well, and by this time finally decided to sleep. He spent most of the time asleep in Grandma or Grandpa's arms.

We headed over to see Danny & Jolene at 4:30. Jolene's parents were in town because her brother Jake had just graduated from boot camp the day before (he is a marine now). We had a lovely time visiting with them. Last Thanksgiving we drove up to visit them with Danny and Jolene, so it was nice to see them this Thanksgiving as well.

We set up the camera on the table and tried to take a family picture on Thanksgiving morning.

While we don't normally head out to the stores on "Black Friday", this morning Matt went to Staples at 6:00 a.m. He had already been up because he fed Ethan for me at 4:45 (what a good hubby he is), so it wasn't that bad. Staples is just down the street from us. He got a set of 3 cordless phones with an answering machine (our other one was on the fritz), and an external hard drive to back up all of the stuff on our computer. That way if your computer crashes, you still have everything. You can also grab it and take it with you in the event of an emergency. Both things were a great deal. Today I decided to put up our Christmas decorations. I usually do that the day after Thanksgiving as I like to enjoy them for a few weeks before Christmas.

Ethan is "sitting" on the couch in his little Christmas outfit that Grandma Walters got him. I decided that since I was putting up the Christmas decorations, that he needed to be festive as well, so I put him in his Christmas outfit :)

This is a video of Ethan "talking" on the couch today. He also had the hiccups.

Ethan took a much needed nap in his swing while I decorated. He hadn't slept all morning, so I was glad he finally fell asleep.
Our Christmas tree... it isn't huge, and yes it's fake... but it's still festive :) I have bad luck with real trees, so I stick to the fake ones now.
I call this my California Christmas Tree

We had a nice weekend. We did end up going to the movies on Friday, and I had Ethan in my sling. He did great, he just slept the entire time. We figure we might as well go out and do things while we can, since he just sleeps. Once he's awake and needs to be entertained, it will be much more difficult. On Saturday we went to Gracie & Hope Oates birthday party at Flaghill park in Yucaipa. The weather was beautiful, and it was fun to watch all the kids. The three of us (Matt, me and Ethan), also went and had dinner at Mill Creek later that evening. It was nice to have a date. We pretty much felt like we were out alone since Ethan slept once again.

I went to the lactation clinic again today, and Ethan weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz. He has been gaining weight very quickly and eating very well, so that has been nice. The ladies at the clinic are really nice and helpful, and it's fun to find out how much weight Ethan has gained, and how much he eats in a feeding. Afterwards I took Ethan to my mom's work so she could show him off to all of her co-workers. I have some more pictures from the past few days... can you tell that I love to take pictures of my little boy? :) The hard part is deciding which ones to put into his scrapbook since I have so many that I love.

This is Ethan's favorite way to sleep... with his hands over his head. He has been sleeping in his crib in his own room for almost a week now. We have a monitor that monitors his breathing, so it gives me much peace of mind. Our house carries noise very well, so I have no problem hearing Ethan when he wakes up hungry in the middle of the night. He's been waking up around 12-1 and 3:30-4:00, and then again around 6:30-7. While I am tired, I suppose it's not horrible, at least I get a few chunks of sleep.

Daddy loves his boy :) We think Ethan might have dimples like his Daddy.... it has looked like it when he's accidentally smiled. I guess we'll find out for sure when he starts smiling for real. I can't wait to see a big ol' smile. He is cooing more now and making cute baby noises. He is also more and more alert with each passing day, although he does still sleep a lot. When he is awake, he's usually pretty happy and content, which is a blessing. He is a great baby :)

We put Ethan in his swing for the first time on Saturday. He liked it, and fell asleep after a bit. I like it because it's portable, so I can cart it around the house if I want.

I took these pictures today after Ethan had his bath. He was all clean and cute, so I couldn't resist :)

2 weeks and lots of photos

We made it to two weeks :) I have to admit, this week has been much harder as far as night time goes. I am much more tired. Ethan has been waking up on his own when he is hungry in the night time... which is nicer than having to wake him, but now I'm not getting near as much sleep. Matt is off today, so last night he took the 1:00 am feeding and let me sleep. I was beginning to feel like a zombie.... in fact last night I told him I was so tired I actually felt drunk... kind of an odd feeling. Today we're going to try to go to the movies. I'm just going to keep Ethan in my sling... we'll see how it goes. Hopefully he'll just sleep. Yesterday I took Ethan to the pediatrician for his follow up appointment. He has gained more weight and is doing well. He won't have to go back now until his 2 month appointment, unless of course something comes up, which hopefully it won't.

Yesterday my friend Faith came over and took some really great pictures of Ethan. She still needs to touch up a few of them in Photoshop, but I wanted to post them :) Ethan did really well and I loved how they turned out... Thanks Faithy!

Last night we went over and had some yummy carne asada with Danny & Jolene. It's so nice having them live closer, we get to see them much more often now. Christian was talking to Ethan.

Sitting in his bouncy seat.... this is how I check my email and use the computer in the mornings. He is usually very awake around 8 am, which is when I usually want to use the computer, so this comes in handy :)

We had our first full weekend at home, and it was nice. On Saturday we went over to mom's for a bit because her garbage disposal had broken, so Matt took a look at it. It turned out to be an easy fix, so we went out for Mongolian BBQ afterwards with my mom and brother. On Sunday we took Ethan to church for the first time. We got there on time, and he did really well, sleeping the entire service. After church we went and had coffee with Matt's parents, and they got to finally see Ethan open his eyes for the first time. They had only seen him sleeping before that. In the afternoon we went to a BBQ to celebrate our friend Thomas graduating college. I just kept Ethan in my sling the whole time, and he did great. Yesterday (Monday) my mom was here for her last day. We went to the lactation clinic again, and Ethan drank 3 ounces in not much time, it was very encouraging. He had also gained 5 ounces in 5 days, so he is doing really well. They said he was the champ of the day :) SUCH an improvement in only a week. He is doing really well with feeding now... he is much more excited about eating and I don't have to spend the entire time waking him up. It's nice that he will also take a bottle. Over the weekend Matt fed him during his 1:30 a.m. feedings, so I was able to sleep from 10-5:00. I felt much better... I even felt normal :) I really can't complain, he is a really good baby. I try to put him down to sleep at 10:00 p.m., and it seems he is following the pattern of waking up to eat at 1:30 and 4:30, so that is really not bad.... most days I have been feeling pretty good.

After the lactation clinic yesterday my mom and I went to Kohl's to do a little Christmas shopping, stopped at Target, went to the bank, had lunch at Chili's, and ran to the mall to pick up one thing. It was a busy day, but we had fun together. Ethan did great... slept the whole time except when I fed him :) It was fun to be able to spend a day out with my mom. Today is my first day at home now with Ethan by myself. I am more tired today, as I didn't put Ethan down until almost 11:00 (I wanted to see if he would sleep all the way until 5:00), but he still woke up at 1:30 and 4:30, and then didn't go back down very well after the 4:30 feeding. Hopefully I'll be able to take a good nap today (I have a hard time napping). I posted a video down below of Ethan with the hiccups last night, and some more pictures.

Another attempt at a family picture taken with Matt's arm. This is before we went to church on Sunday. I think Ethan was yawning.

First Bath

It's been nice having my mom here the past 2 days. She cooked some food for us, and helped me clean my house on Thursday. Yesterday I pumped and she watched Ethan and fed him so I could catch up on a little sleep. She watched him again later in the afternoon so Matt and I could go out for just a bit by ourselves. She'll be here on Monday too, since she gets the day off for Veteran's day. If I'm up to it, we're going to go to Babies R Us and get some pictures taken of Ethan. Of course, whenever she sits down anywhere, Cookie has to be on her lap as well as Ethan.

Grandma W. cuddling with her grandson and her granddog.

Peek-A-BooWe gave Ethan his first bath yesterday (just a sponge bath until the umbilical stump falls off)
He did really well, only fussing a little bit. He didn't even full out cry.

Onto Week 2

We made it through the first week. Hard to beleive that just a week ago today I was in the hospital giving birth. Matt went back to work today, which we were sad about... but I guess someone has to earn an income eh? It was so nice to have those days home together. Yesterday we went again to the lactation consultant, and Ethan had gained an almost 2 ounces, which was very exciting. Then they weighed him before and after I fed him, and he got 2 ounces of milk, which also made me feel really good. So things are going much better on the feeding front. Matt and I went out to lunch each day that he was home, which was fun. The weather was gorgeous, and we enjoyed sitting outside.

My mom is here now today, tomorrow and Monday. She took a few days off of work. We're going to try to get my house cleaned today, and tomorrow we're going to take Ethan to get his pictures taken. It's nice to have her here with me and we get to spend some time together.

Last night Patty was so kind to bring us a yummy meal, and our friends Danny and Jolene came over with baby Christian for a while. It was nice to spend some time with them and introduce the boys to each other. They really have no choice but to be friends :) Here are some more pictures from yesterday.

We tried to take a picture of ourselves... didn't turn out so great, but it's what we have so far of the 3 of us.

Alright, now I'm mad too and all you guys are doing is laughing at us!!
Christian is "holding" Ethan...haha. He looks so big, but just 2 1/2 months ago he was smaller than Ethan. Christian was 6 lbs. 2 oz. when he was born, and Ethan is just over 7 lb.s here.
