Last night Ethan figured out how to jump in his jumper. He was having a blast! He hasn't been that content in a while. I took a little video clip of him because he was so cute.

New haircut and other pictures

I chopped my hair off yesterday. Well I didn't chop it, but my hairdresser chopped it off. My post baby hormones kicked in and I've been loosing hair by the handful every day.... so sad :( I was actually liking my hair longer, but since I've lost so much of it, it was looking rather straggly, thus the hair cut. Basically I'm back to my old style. It actually feels good to have it off my neck, and it's easier to do this way. I tried to take a picture of it with the timer.

We went over to Danny & Jolene's last night and had dinner. Of course it was a lovely time. I took a couple of pictures of the boys chillin.
Ethan: "dude, watch your hand there..."
"... um, I think you need to move your hand, that's not cool"
I took a few pictures of Ethan yesterday because I thought he looked so cute in his little hat. The weather has been gorgeous... the hills are green, it's been really clear and it's been in the 70's... doesn't get better than that.
Notice the pointer finger in the mouth as usual.

This morning we went over to visit Shelly and her new baby girl Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn is just barely two weeks old. She's a cutie.... she has the best little chubby cheeks. Ethan looks like a giant next to her.... hard to beleive he was smaller than that just 4 months ago! No wonder babies eat so much with all that rapid growing they do.

Sucking his finger

Here are a couple of pictures and a video of Ethan sucking his finger... his new favorite thing. The funny thing is that he likes to suck his pointer finger.

I don’t actually watch Oprah all that often, but today I did and I was inspired. It was about “freeganism”, which is when people basically live off of things they find, usually in dumpsters. These people make good incomes, but basically dumpster dive and find food and other awesome stuff. It was actually pretty amazing how much great food they found in the trash outside of grocery stores. They do it more for a statement and because they feel like so much good stuff is thrown away, that they can help by using it instead of buying more stuff. They brought about a good point, and one that I’ve pondered often, about consumerism, and how much do we really need. We often work so that we can buy more. Do we really need more? Usually we do not, and we think that by having more it will make us happy, but really it doesn’t.

I’m often dismayed when I find myself wanting more stuff, or just constantly thinking about what new and cool thing I would like to have. As someone who hates clutter, I have to ask mself why would I want to bring more of it into my home? Just because something is a good deal, is really cool, or “might come in handy”, does not mean that I need to buy it. Will buying more clothes, when I already have so much really be a good use of my money? Do I really need more scrapbook supplies and craft stuff? Will more outfits for my cute little boy make us any happier? Most likely my life will go on just the same if I don’t get an item I am wanting, and in fact it just might be easier because then I won’t have to deal with it in the future when I no longer want it.

A couple of years ago I decided to go two months without buying anything that I didn’t need. I actually enjoyed doing it, because it kind of puts things into perspective. I like to shop in particular because I find it to be a fun activity, not because I actually need something. I think I will do this again… I will not buy anything that I don’t need for the month of March. Anyone else want to join me?

My friend Christy H. got it right when she said blogging is the best free therapy ;)

from the archives....

I thought I'd humiliate myself and post this picture from like 1994. It's Jolene and I in Canada. I used to go on vacation with her family. We would drive up to Canada and go camping in the Canadian Rockies for 2 weeks, it was great fun.

I love my frizzy permed hair, it's great... and that awesome jacket that I'm wearing is too cute. I think I'm holding Canadian money or something.

What's on your fridge?

First of all I don't like the color of my fridge, and I like to put way too much stuff on it. I always have my grocery lists (one for the regular grocery store, one for Trader Joe's, one for Costco and one for Target). I also have tons of pictures...the ones in the ribbon holder thing are all from this year's Christmas cards. There are a few magnets that we got on various vacations (I like to look at them and reminisce and dream of future vacations). I usually have an announcement or invitation hanging on the door. On the top is my digital timer, which I use all the time. There's also a nifty conversion chart that I use once in a while cooking. Clipped on the bottom I have a bunch of recipes I want to try (along with a whole three ring binder full of more recipes I want to try). So there you have it, that's what's on my fridge.

Now I tag Krista, Christy, and Lisa.

The races and some other pictures

Matt had a great time at the races this weekend. On Saturday he got to see the truck race, but then the Nationwide race got canceled due to rain. Matt and Mike were disappointed, but happy they at least got to see the truck race. They ended up lucking out because the Cup race was also postponed due to rain (it was supposed to take place on Sunday), and both the Cup race and Nationwide race were moved to Monday. Matt and his brother got to see the end of the cup race and the whole Nationwide race, so they ended up seeing all three races! Originally they were only supposed to see the Nationwide race, so it worked out very nicely in the end. Of course they had a blast, how could you not when you get to be in a box! They got food, drinks, and best of all, a great view. The were in the in-field right above the pits.

I also had a wonderful time on Saturday sewing with my mom. My brother was even around, so the three of us and Ethan got to hang out. I sewed up a storm, and Ethan was kind enough to take a three hour nap for me as well. It was great just to hang out with my family.

On Sunday we went and saw Danny preach at his church. Afterwards Jolene was kind enough to make us a yummy lunch and we hung out for a while. As an added bonus I got to see Jolene's mom Joy who is out visiting for three weeks. It was a great afternoon :)

Here are some pictures:

Ethan sleeping in his sling on Sunday evening. I usually only resort to using the sling at home when Ethan is cranky (which is usually the hour before bed time), and it works quite well. He usually ends up dozing in it. I use it a lot at church or when we're out.
Tummy time. Ethan is getting stronger and stronger. It's kinda crazy that just a little less than 4 months ago he was just a floppy newborn and couldn't even hold up his head. It amazes me how quickly they develop and grow.
"Get me off my tummy mom, I'm done with this!"
"Come on... stop taking pictures already and pick me up!"

Here is a little video clip I took of Ethan this morning. I realized he is in his jammies yet again. I do actually put him in real clothes, I just happen to take pictures of him after he gets up in the morning when he's still in his jammies. He's usually so happy and cheerful at that time, so I can't resist.

baby clothes

While I love having a little boy, the little girl clothing is just so much cuter. I always stroll down the isles and isles of baby girl clothes so that I can find the two racks of boy clothes, and admire all the cute outfits. I had to laugh when I came across this online today:

"Girls clothes get more space in the store, and it's universally acknowledged that baby and toddler girls are more fun to dress. This is deeply unfair to mothers of boys. But they'll get their revenge in three years, when moms of girls have to deal with hoochie-mama clothing for preschoolers."

Creating sanctuary in your bedroom

I came across this post about creating sanctuary in your bedroom from The Organizing Junkie's blog. I thought I'd share the link because it's beautifully written. The author is a Christian and talks about how important it is to a marriage to have a bedroom that is a sanctuary.

Nice Friday

In case you didn't notice I got a great new look for my blog :) Designs By Summer did it. She did a great job and I'm excited to have my own custom design. I tried to figure out how to design my own blog, but decided I have enough creative interests going on without adding another right now, haha.

This morning Matt stayed home with Ethan and I went to the gym... it felt really good to work out at the gym. I can actually start taking Ethan now, and it's only $10 a month to add him onto my membership so that he can go in the nursery. I was just waiting until he was 4 months old so that if he gets sick it won't be quite as bad.

After I came home and showered and stuff Matt took me out for sushi. It was very yummy and nice to get out together. Ethan was a stinker and didn't nap like he should have been, but thankfully he quietly sucked on his paci, so Matt and I could at least enjoy one another.

Here are some random pictures:

Ethan in his car seat today
Me giving Ethan a bath this week. He loves baths.

Look how lovely this picutre is... ain't I a beauty? haha. Matt is mad-dogging me for taking his picture (we were in the drive thru at McDonalds getting soft serve).

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Yay for a clean house, clean clothes, clean sheets.... lots of clean around here :) This week has been pretty low key. I went walking two mornings, did Tae Boe one morning, and this morning cleaned my house. On Tuesday I had lunch with Faith and 3 of her kids at Chilies. It was nice to get out and have a nice lunch.

I'm still batteling naps with Ethan. Most days he only sleeps 30-45 minutes per nap (3 or 4 times a day), however there have been a few days thrown in where he as taken a 2 1/2-3 hour nap. I've tried leaving him in his crib and hoping he goes back to sleep... but it never happens, he just cries. Once he's awake, he's awake and ready to get up. Thankfully he's still usually pretty happy... until about 6:00 at night, then he's pretty much done for the day. On the days that he has had good naps, he's definitely more happy and pleasant. Usually he's pretty content in his exersaucer, so he's been spending some time in it when I need to get stuff done... since I can hardly get anything done when he naps. It's amazing how 30 minutes flies by! I'm still very grateful that he sleeps well at night. While I have been a bit frustrated with his naps, at least I'm well rested :) I just keep hoping this is a phase and will end.

Matt is super excited about Saturday because he'll be at the races in a box seat on pit row with his brother (a Christmas gift from his parents). Ethan and I will be spending the day at my moms. I'm going to bring my sewing machine and we're going to sew. It will be nice to spend the day with her. Tomorrow is Matt's Friday off which is always nice :) He's going to take me out for a sushi lunch.... yum.

So here's a random fact that I received in an e-mail from my mother in law:

If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction.

For some reason I find this quite amazing.

Watching the race

I guess Ethan and Cookie decided to watch the race with Matt.

I asked Ethan which car he was going for, but he wasn't sure... he said he likes whichever driver his daddy likes.

The Sweetest Thing

Matt is very excited to be watching the Daytona race (NASCAR for those of you who don't know). I basically don't care about any sport at all, so unfortunately I don't share his excitment. However I did get a scrapbook page finished while Ethan napped and Matt watched his race.

I love to organize!

I was struck with the organizing bug this afternoon. I decided to clean out my pajama and sock drawers. It always feels so good when I get rid of stuff I'm not using anymore. I threw away a trash bag full of socks and sweats and pajamas that I no longer wear. Now I have more room in my drawers :) Cleaning out my stuff always makes me feel good. It also makes me realize how much I already have. I try to be very mindful of what I bring into my house. If I don't love it or need it, then why am I bringing it inside? It will probably wind up shoved into some remote cabinet or into the back of the closet and forgotten about. Thus, if I don't bring it into my home in the first place, I won't have to deal with it latter. After ruthlessly cleaning out my closet a year or two ago I have a rule I abide by: when I bring in a new item of clothing, I get rid of something I no longer love or wear. It's really amazing how many of my clothes I don't wear, especially now that I am no longer working. I'm thinking I need to go through and get rid of a lot of things, but I'm not ready quite yet... perhaps in a few more months.

In addition to my drawers I cleaned out the cabinets in the bathroom. I try to do this every couple of months, because it's amazing how many almost empty containers and other stuff you can amass in your bathroom drawers.

A couple of weeks ago I cleaned out my books. If you are an avid reader like me and wind up with a lot of books, one great thing to do with them is sell them to the paperback exchange or used book store. There are online websites where you can do this and there are a couple of stores in Yucaipa as well. They will buy your books for a quarter of whatever price is on the book. Then, all of the books in their store they sell for half of the cover price. Of course as my husband likes to remind me, you can always go to the library and check them out for FREE! I've never tried this, but I really should... especially since our library is literally two blocks from my house.

A couple more pictures

Sid and Marlene (Matt's parents) stopped by for a minutes today, so I took a couple of pictures of them with Ethan. Gotta love how chunky Ethan's face looks here... with his double chin hanging out, haha. What can I say... he's a healthy baby and he likes to eat ;)

Grandpa kissing Ethan

Dinner at my mom's

In an effort to take some pictures of other people besides just Ethan, I snapped a few shots at dinner last night.... they aren't the greatest, but you get the idea. We went over to my mom's for some burgers and hung out for a little while.

I love the spit up around Ethan's mouth in this one

In case you can't tell, Ethan is helping his grandma BBQ. He insisted that he grill his own burger. This morning I made french toast and now Matt is getting to work on painting the trim around our doors.... it's never been painted. I'm going to go help him once I'm finished with this. The trim is off-white and doesn't match the white of our baseboards. It's one of those things we keep meaning to do but just haven't. Hope you're all having a great Saturday!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day usually isn't a big deal to me, mostly because it's so commercialized. However I do like to make sure my loved ones know how much I love them :) I have so many amazing people in my life who I love and love me. Here are a few of them:
  • I love my amazing husband and best friend Matt who works hard to provide for us and lavishes me with his love every day.
  • This year I have one extra person to lavish my love upon, my sweet little Ethan. I feel so very blessed to have him, as he brings me so much joy.

  • My kind and generous in-laws
  • My grandparents
  • My sis Jolene, and her husband and baby
  • My great friend Faithy
  • All of our other amazing friends
Since I'm talking about love, here are some other things that I love:
  • reading a good book in front of a toasty warm fire
  • cuddles with my honey
  • making my little boy smile and laugh
  • hot bubble baths
  • a funny movie
  • the ocean
  • being outside on a beautiful day
  • being creative and making something
  • a good bottle of wine
  • fresh chocolate chip cookies
  • skiing
  • the feeling after I've had a good workout

Exersaucer and my head

Yesterday I went and took my mom lunch at work. It was nice to get to see her for a bit. Much to her disappointment Ethan was napping very nicely, and I didn't want to wake him up, so she only got to look at him. I'm glad I didn't because he ended up taking a good 3 hour nap.

Ahhh those sweet blue eyes and rosy cheeks :) We're thinking that Ethan might just end up with blue eyes. I know they could still change (I've read it can take up to 9 months), so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Last week we set up Ethan's exersacuer. He loves to stretch his legs out and be straight, so I was pretty sure he'd like it. He gets excited about the toys and loves that he can be upright and see what's going on.

Yesterday I was loading Ethan's stroller into my trunk. I set it on the ground, and then went to close my trunk while still bending over. Well, my head was still under it a little, and I ended up slamming the trunk on my head full force. I had to sit in my car and cry for a little bit before I could drive again. I seriously saw stars. When I got home I noticed there was a bit of blood matted to my hair and I had a killer headache. I think I got a mild concussion because I felt a little out of it and a bit nauseous as well. I got a good night's sleep, but my head still hurts today so I'm taking easy... I didn't go walking this morning and I'm staying home all day. What a klutz I am! Arghh!
