Happy Thanksgiving!

I am very thankful and happy to report that since receiving the IVs Ethan has definitely made a turn for the better. He has been drinking fluids and even had a little bit of toast, banana and yogurt. He is still very week and fussy, but I can tell he is doing better. I am so relieved after such a hard week.... I wouldn't wish my week on anyone! We pray he continues to drink, eat and regain his strength. I cannot wait to have my happy little guy back. It really makes me appreciate the normal happy baby he is when I've had him so weak, crabby, and sad for the past several days. I really appreciate everyone's concern and prayers.

We'll be going over to my in-laws today to enjoy a yummy Thanksgiving. My mom and my brother are joining us. I'm glad Ethan is well enough that we can go celebrate and bask in the blessings of our Lord.

I realized that I never posted the complete set of Ethan's teddy bear pictures. I got to add the last one when he turned one :) The last two pictures were taken a month apart, I just didn't realize until afterward he's wearing the same shirt in both pictures! Here they all are.... twelve months of Ethan:
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are so very richly blessed :)

This morning Ethan woke up at 5:00 and just was not himself. He still had diarrhea. He hadn't made much progress getting fluids down, so we took him to the ER at 6:45. Thank goodness Matt got home last night and was able to go with me. We were the only ones in ER at the time and got in very quickly (yay). Ethan had an IV in by 8:00 and they pumped some fluids into him. He screamed and flailed getting the IV in and was quite upset, but then fell asleep on me for about 45 min which made things much easier. He woke up and before I could grab his arm he ripped out his IV resulting in blood squirting everywhere. Three nurses held him down and they got it cleaned up. It looked rather grizzly and Ethan was distraught. It took him a while to calm down. They didn't put in another IV because he had gotten just about enough fluids. They sent us home and told us if he doesn't have at least 3-4 wet diapers in the next 24 hours we need to back for more fluids.

We are home now, Ethan is back in bed. We're praying he turns around now that he has gotten some hydration. When I put him in the car he actually drank about 1/4 of his sippy cup (big progress). Hopefully we'll still be able to enjoy a nice Thanksgivng tomorrow. I'm just glad Matt is home to help me. I am SO very greatful that I'm not a single mother. Single mothers deserve all kinds of awards... that is tough.

Thanks for your prayers, they are much appreciated :)

What a day

one very sick baby who would not drink anything and has had very bad diarrhea

one visit to the doctor.... who wasn't all that much help.

one pound and a half lost by Ethan

one desperate and sad mama who had to hold the very sick baby on the floor and squirt pedialyte down his throat with a syringe while he cried

one very weary and tired mama who is counting down the seconds for her husband to get home from his business trip... and oh so very grateful that she is not a single mama

one sore back from carrying around a heavy baby for 3 days straight trying to do anything and everything to make him happy

one Mama who is praying fervently for her baby to get better, get some liquids down, not have any more diarrhea and for a better day tomorrow. If we don't see some progress we have to go the ER for IVs :(

an upadate and a question

-Ethan is still sick. He slept for 13 hours last night ( he woke up sick twice and needed to be cleaned up, but went right back to sleep). My poor little guy was up for only an hour today before going back to sleep. The hour that he was up all he wanted was to be held (VERY unlike him), got sick once and had VERY sick eyes. He still has not eaten anything, but thankfully he's drinking. It's so sad when your baby is so sick :(

-Matt is leaving in a bit to go to Seattle for work but will be home late tomorrow night. I hate when he has to travel, but I'm glad this is a short trip. The thought of taking care of a sick baby all alone for two days does not excite me... I'll be glad when he returns home.

-Matt smoked a chicken and some pork on Saturday, we've been enjoying it. He made some modifications to his smoker in hopes of getting it to burn a little hotter, so that was his trial run before he smokes a Thanksgiving turkey this week.

-I have a question for you all. I'm looking for a toy organizer for Ethan's room.

-Thanks for all the compliments on my blog layout :) I felt like designing a new one the other day.

stomach flu

Ethan seems to have the stomach flu. I spent last night and this morning cleaning up vomit and diarrhea. Not so fun. Matt went to church while I stayed home with Ethan. This his first bout of the flu. Thankfully he is in decent spirits (kinda crabby, but not too bad), he just has zero appetite. Hopefully it runs through his system quickly and he recovers fast. Now I'm praying that Matt and I don't get it!

a video and a ball

This morning I was cleaning the house. I always take my couch cushions off and vacuum them and rotate them. Ethan found this to be an opportune time to climb up on the couch. Normally he is unable because it is too high due to the cushions. He was hilarious so I had to take a video. He would climb up and then dive off head first. He also stood up on his own once in the video... he's been doing that quite a bit lately.... getting closer and closer to walking. Sorry... the video is kinda wobbly.

As promised here is a picture of the fabric ball I made yesterday. I put 2 bells inside of it so it jingles. So far Ethan loves it :) Maybe because it's soft and jingles.... and easy for a baby to hold. It took me quite a while to figure out how to do it from the directions. I made an additional one last night, and I was able to do it WAY faster. It is not even close to as cute as the ones on the blog where I got the pattern, but I like it :) Nothing like a homeade toy. I have a feeling I'll make a few of these for gifts.

Yesterday we got our internet upgraded from DSL to Fios.... oh my goodness it is so much faster, what fun!

  • I woke up SUPER tired because I hardly slept last night (not anyone's fault, I just had issues).
  • I made it to the gym at 8:00 am (for the second time this week) inspite of being tired
  • came home and cleaned both bathrooms really well (finally)
  • I spent the rest of the morning making one of these for Ethan(I'll take a pic and post it later)
  • I tried to take a nap, but as usual couldn't, so instead I "rested" with my eyes closed for an hour. It still refreshed me.
  • my son spent a total of 6 hours in his crib because he played for an hour before taking his first nap and then another 90 minutes before taking his second nap.
  • am currently making macaroni and cheese for dinner.... what a lame-o wife I am. just not in the mood to cook tonight
  • hoping i get good sleep tonight

Matt and I had our first weekend "alone" since having Ethan. Finances are a bit tight for us right now and we didn't really want to spend money on a hotel room, so we decided to have a "staycation" here at home. It was actually just as enjoyable because not having to care for a baby makes staying at home feel like a vacation :) We dropped Ethan off at my mom's on Friday around 4:30 and picked him up at 5:30 pm on Sunday.

Friday we enjoyed a yummy dinner at The Farm in Redlands, which of course included their delicious flourless chocolate cake for dessert. We love that restaurant. We tried to go to a movie, but didn't make it in time, so instead we went home and watched one (The Bourne Ultimatum) that had come in the mail from Netflix... it was just as enjoyable.

Saturday we headed out to Newport Beach. It took us almost two hours to get there (due to traffic from the fires in Anaheim Hills), but thankfully we made it out there before the freeways were shut down. The weather was GORGEOUS, and as long as you didn't look back at the ugly black smoke, it was beautiful :) Can you beleive it was 90 degrees at the beach in mid November? We actually layed out in the sun all day in our bathing suits. It was very relaxing. It was warmer than on some days that I have been in the summer.... crazy.

There were some dolphins swimming up and down the coast all day. I love watching them.

You can see some of the smoke out there in the distance from the fires. The land that you see is Catalina Island.

After packing up our gear and putting it back in the car we strolled along the sand and watched a beautiful sun set.... much more red than normal due to the smoke. A beautiful end to a beautiful day at the beach :)
We then went to a local brew pub and enjoyed a yummy pizza. Once we decided to head home we were faced with the challenge of how to get there, being that the 2 freeways we could take were closed. We consulted Matt's handy dandy Blackberry and figured that our best bet would be to take the Ortega Hwy since our only other option was the 605 and it had VERY bad traffic. It took us another two hours to get home, but thankfully we were in no hurry and didn't have to worry about a baby.

Was a day at the beach worth the four hours of driving?

Sure. When you get to be alone with your husband and you're in no hurry, it doesn't matter :)

Sunday we spent the day relaxing at Glen Ivy spa. It was WONDERFUL. That place is one of my favorite ways to spend a day. We enjoyed lounging in the sun and reading once again (since it was 90 degrees), swam in the different spas and pools, did the mud, enjoyed a delicious lunch, and even did the grotto (an underground "experience" where you get a body mask and some other fun stuff).

We picked up ethan from my mom's and stayed for dinner. He was a very good boy for her and they had a blast together. Thank you SO much mom, we sure do appreciate you :)

What a wonderful, relaxing, fun weekend :)

7 Random Things

I while back I was tagged by Eileen to do this.... here it finally is :) I've done these before, but here are more random things about me.

1. I'm bad with details. I remember "the big picture" about things, but please don't ask me details; especially technical details. One area in which I do remember details is people's likes and dislikes. I don't know why, but I will remember if you hate or love tomatoes, how you like your coffee or your favorite place to shop. Matt is a very technical detail oriented person. Sometimes I drive him nuts when he asks me details about something (like street names or how something is made) and I have no clue.

2. One of my worst faults is that I have a hard time paying attention. My mind just likes to wander. It especially wanders if I'm listening to a speaker. In college I was a meticulous note taker... it was the only way I could pay attention and retain information. I've learned over the years to make myself focus when others are talking to me, but ask Matt.... if I'm looking at you and acting like I'm paying attention, but I have that "dreamy" look in my eyes.... I'm probably off in la-la land. I hate this about myself, and I try to work on it... but if you love me you know this about me :)

3. I love to sew but I hate pinning. I try to avoid pinning things whenever I can. That's probably why I do much better with simple projects :) This probably goes back to not enjoying details.

4. I forgive people really easily. In fact most of the time I forget why I was mad in the first place. I hate conflict and go out of my way to avoid it. I would much rather just enjoy the moment and the people I'm with. I'm definitely more of a happy-go-lucky type of a person. Losing my dad made me like this even more so because I realize the brevity of life and I never want to be in conflict with someone.

5. I am not a picky eater at all. I love trying new things and discovering new foods. There are few foods I do not like, but here they are: pineapple on pizza and sweet pickles. If you ever have me over for a meal rest assured that I enjoy most everything :)

6. My favorite job ever was when I worked at Manhattan bagel. It was so social and fun. I loved the constant commotion, talking to customers, making coffee drinks, filling orders and hanging out with other employees. I didn't even mind the cleaning. It's funny that my favorite job was also my lowest paying job ever :) If I ever have to work part time again I would honestly love to work at Starbucks.

I just realized after publishing this that there are only 6.... maybe number seven should be that I'm forgetful!!!

7. I am a bit OCD. I have to have things organized and in order at almost all times. My files are color coded and very organized, my closet is color coded and organized by type of shirt... you get the point. Becoming a mom I have definitely relaxed with this a bit, because when you have a child you cannot have a clean, picked up house all of the time. However, when my house is clean and picked up and in order, it makes me very happy :)

There you have it, seven random things about me :) Now I tag Jolene, Christy, Patty (because you never do these things), Charlee (because I know you'll always play along) and .... YOU!!!!! Play along with me if you have a chance.

the stats

Ethan did well at his one year check up today. The doc said everything looks good. He could stand to be getting more formula or milk, but at least he's doing much better than at his 9onth check up with that. Here are the stats:
  • 21.5 pounds (26th percentile)
  • 31 inches long. (80th percentile)
Our long skinny boy :) Shirts are too short and pants fall off of him... gotta love it. As for the shots, he had three of them, and he did quite well. He screamed when he got poked but recovered rather quickly. He is now happily playing.

playing outside

Ethan and I were playing outside last night, as we normally do when the weather is nice. I was playing with my camera. I took a few cute shots.

Those big blue eyes.... oh how I love them :)

Today I'm....

  • very grateful for all of the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving our country. I am thankful to live in such a great nation. Thank you Lord that I can worship you freely and that I have a home, 2 cars and too much food!
  • not digging the fact that my poor hubby had to get up at 4:00 to get into work by 5:00 for a very long video conference.
  • feeling bad for my son who seems to be getting tooth after tooth lately and doesn't always enjoy it.
  • grateful for my cup of coffee! 'nuf said!
  • needing to get into the shower before my niece and nephew come over.... but feeling rather content in my jammies.
  • looking very forward to this weekend when my mom will take Ethan and Matt and I have some fun stuff planned.
  • laughing at the my son who is at the moment growling and grunting and so very "boy".
  • in the mood to scrapbook because I got a ton of pictures in the mail yesterday, however I don't think I'll find the time for it. Perhaps tomorrow.
  • feeling like designing a blog. Anyone want a new blog design? I only know how to do blogger. E-mail me at
  • hoping you all have a fabulous day!

Here are a few layouts I've recently completed for Ethan's book.

Monday Shmunday

We had a nice low key weekend. After a month of business, birthdays and throwing parties, it was VERY nice :) I went to Dana Point on Saturday for a bridal shower for a lovely friend from college. I met up with Jolene in Riverside and she was kind enough to drive us the rest of the way. She used to room with the guest of honor. We actually got down there a little early so we went to the beach and enjoyed the beautiful weather for a little bit. It was so much fun to go to a bridal shower and giggle and laugh at all the fun gifts. I haven't been to a bridal shower in a while, it's been baby showers for the last few years :) While I was away Matt chilled with Ethan for the day. I actually ended up being gone about 7 hours, so it was a long day.

Sunday was stormy and cold and it felt so nice to hunker down inside. I sewed for several hours and sipped some yummy tea. Matt did his usual.... watched the race.

I came down with a cold around Thursday, but thankfully by Sunday I was feeling better. Yay.

Here are some random pictures from last week:

Playing outside in the evening. Ethan's face is filthy because he had just eaten, and I didn't wipe him up very well :) I figured he was taking a bath soon, so oh well.

Eating some Honeycomb out of his Snack Trap
yum. He likes to share with Cookie. Yesterday he shared his snack with his buddy Jacob in the nursery at church.

Crawling into his little play house thing.

Playing in Cookie's bed.... a favorite activity

Playing with a door... another favorite activity

E and Cookie... best buds
Rolling around on the floor with Daddy

Yesterday Wesley Oates was baptized at church. After church the Oates had people over for a lunch. We didn't hang out for long because E was really tired and ready for a nap. It's always special when our friends' children are baptized :)

Lastly, I wanted to post a picture of my brother from Halloween. He came over and I did his makeup for him. I was quite proud, it took a while. Don't worry, he only went to an adult party, he didn't go around scaring kids :)
Hope you all have a great Monday! I'm off to do my usual fun Monday stuff.... laundry and grocery shopping :)
