a visit from siblings

While we were in Havasu Matt's sister Annette and Dan were out visiting. Annette came by herself and got to celebrate her birthday out here. While we missed being able to see them, we were able to see everyone for a few hours on Sunday after we got home. It was fun to hang out and BBQ and chit chat. I made everyone take some pictures because it is not often that all four Hekman kids are together in the same place.

Annette is the oldest, Mike is next in line, then Matt, then Dan (on the far right)

Ethan had fun playing with his cousins and playing in the playhouse. All the kids love running around Grandma and Grandpa's big yard.

It was such a fun evening. The only sad part is that it can't happen more often :)

On an unrelated note I got my car fixed yesterday. The problem was the alternator. Apparantly it was bad (it had just been replaced a month ago). It was a bummer for the mechanic, but thankfully it didn't cost us anything. Unfortunately we were driving it home and noticed the speedometer isn't working :( Now I have to take it back yet again for a few hours to have that fixed. I have to figure out a time I can do that. What a pain.

We are back from Havasu and we had a great trip. It was fun to be away from home and our normal routine. Our good friends Thomas and Leighann were kind enough to invite us to come out and stay at their Havasu house with them and play on the lake in their boat. We got out there Thursday night, then spent Friday and Saturday on the lake and came home this morning (Sunday). We managed to stay cool in the heat (by pretty much staying in the water a lot), and had lots of fun riding in the boat, playing on the beaches we staked out and swimming in the water. Here are some pictures from my handy dandy point and shoot (I didn't feel like carting my DSLR around).

Our little family on the beach we staked out on Friday.
28 weeks pregnant.... and feeling a bit like a whale as I hefted myself on and off the boat :)
Ethan and I were splashing here
This was after a long day on the lake. This was on Friday. We were out from 8:30-4:00. As you can tell Ethan is very tired :)

The view from one side of the beach we staked out on the second day. It was the BEST beach... perfect for the kids and very pretty.

Ethan had fun on the boat. He loved riding around and watching all the other boats.

Our beach on Saturday.

The boys on the boat (Jonathan is 6 months younger than Ethan).

It's rough being a toddler when you're tired and there's no where to nap. We drove around in the boat so that the boys would fall asleep. They both got very short naps, but something is better than nothing! They were SUPER tired by the end of the day.

sleepy babies

Jeff and Carmen came along. They were good sports and got to see what a river trip is like with little ones in tow :) Here they are having some fun on the tube.

Chillin' in the front of the boat.
This morning we packed up and headed home. About an hour and a half into our trip our check battery light came on. This was when were literaly in the middle of no where, in 113 degree heat, with no services anywhere in sight and no cell service. We prayed, prayed prayed that we could make it home, or at least make it to civilization. We made it over a hundred miles and then our car died. Thankfully we were in Palm Desert at this point. I was able to call AAA and a tow truck came out. The bummer part was waiting on the side of the freeway in 108 degree heat with a baby, a pregnant lady and a dog in the car. We whipped out my spray fan I had used on the boat and kept spraying everyone down while we waited. After waiting almost an hour we were rescued. We loaded up in the tow truck and were towed the rest of the way home. We were very glad to make it home.
Ethan's first ride in a tow truck. We were very happy to get out of the heat and into the air conditioning of the tow truck.
While it was a huge bummer, we were just grateful it happened in civilization and not when we were in the middle of no where. God is good and protected us, and we made it home. Thankfully I had lots of suckers in my diaper bag and that is what kept Ethan happy. He actually did REALLY well considering he was in his car seat from 8:30-1:30 with no breaks.

The ending to our trip was definitely a bummer, but we still had a great time. Getting away was fun. Thanks again for having us Thomas and Leighann!

Below is a little video montage of our trip... nothing super exciting, just a few clips I took here and there :)

thank you

I just wanted to thank you guys for the outpouring of prayers and support as I struggle during this difficult time. It really means a lot to me. I appreciate your continued prayers :) In the meantime it's kind of hard to blog, so I'm not even going to try. I cling to the hope of the Lord and tell myself daily that this WILL pass and things WILL get better.

We are leaving this afternoon to go to Havasu with some friends. I'm looking forward to it, but also nervous about how I will handle the heat being this pregnant. I guess we'll just play it by ear and hope for the best :) I'm bringing along my point and shoot camera, so I'll at least have a few pictures to share when we return.

Father's Day

We had a nice Father's Day. We gave Matt his present and went to church. After church we had lunch with Matt's parents and his brother Mike and family at Chilie's. The kids did well and we were able to enjoy a nice lunch together. Ethan was so very tired and he crashed as soon as we got in the car.

Later that afternoon my brother came over and we BBQd hamburgers upon Matt's request. The weather was gorgeous yesterday as well.

Father's day is a mixed bag for me. I am excited to celebrate it with Matt and Ethan, as Matt is such an amazing father. Yet I'm sad because I miss my own father, who's been with our Heavenly Father for 7 years now.

To be honest I've been in a pretty low place for the past several weeks. I've been dealing with some mental health issues and have hardly gotten any sleep for about the past 6 weeks (maybe 4 hours a night on average). I'm to the point where I can hardly function some days. It's been rough... one of the roughest phases I've ever gone through. Much of this I believe is due to being pregnant and crazy hormones and stuff, but I'm working on figuring out what is going on and trying to get through it (with the help of my Dr.). I just want to feel good again, have joy and energy, and feel like "me". I hesitate to share this, and really the only reason I am sharing this on my blog is because I covet your prayers right now.

Thank you.

2 fun websites for toddlers

I found this website where you click on the farm animals and they make noise. Ethan LOVES it and asks me to look at it several times a day. Amazingly he never seems to tire of it :)

This ABC zoo site is also a fun one.

Just thought I'd pass these along :)

Ethan talking on the phone

The past couple of days Ethan likes to pretend to talk on the phone to his daddy. I think it's pretty cute and it melts Matt's heart :) I was holding him on my lap, so the video isn't the greatest.

I love faces weekly entry

Theme: sepia tone
kids entry

I decided to enter the weekly contest on the iHeartFaces blog for the first time this week. I took this photo of my nephew Stephen a few weeks back. I just love his little smile and his bright eyes.

Shoes & Jammies

Who says you can't wear shoes with footed jammies? Lately Ethan has insisted that he have shoes on, even over his jammies. It's pretty funny.

He also likes to try to wear our shoes, although he can't walk in them very well.

Here is a video clip of him walking in his jammies with my sandals on the wrong feet.

An encouraging book

I am about 3/4 of the way through this book. I haven't really ever listened to Dr. Laura because I have satellite radio, and this is the first book of hers that I've read. I have to say it is very encouraging. Sometimes being a stay at home mom can be a thankless job, but this book has really encouraged and affirmed me in what I do day in and day out.

I know there are many of you who read my blog that would probably love to stay at home and work out of necessity, and I certainly don't post this to make you feel bad. I was just encouraged by this book and wanted to share it.

I needed a book like this right about now :) It really made me appreciate all the little things about life right now as a mom at home with a little one.

I am so very grateful that I get to be here for every development that my son has, see just about every smile, kiss all of his owies, watch his face light up every time he learns something new, invent games and play, teach him new things, and take him on errands and show him the world. Ethan gets to be with one of the two people who love him most every single day. He only gets one childhood, and I get to be there every step of the way. This warms my heart and makes me happy.

If you are a stay at home mom I encourage you to pick up this book, and if you aren't one you just might enjoy it as well :)

This weekend we were fortunate to get to go to Vegas together. Matt's mom watched Ethan on Friday and my mom had him the rest of the weekend. It was such a nice wonderful treat to get away for an entire weekend together. I guess this was our "babymoon" before our next child :) We left Friday morning and came back Sunday night.

Friday we got into town around 3:00. We relaxed for a bit in our hotel room and then went to dinner and a movie at a new shopping center down the street from the strip. It was kinda like Victoria Gardens. We had a very yummy dinner at The Yardhouse and then saw "The Hangover". It was SO funny and we both ended up enjoying it a lot.... it was way funnier than we even thought it would be. It is one of those stupid comedies, but we love those :) Here is a picture of us right before dinner taken by Matt.

Matt eating his jambalaya. He thought it was very tasty.

My dinner was delicious. It was a crusted halibut with mushroom sauce and garlic mashed potatoes.
I know it seems rather boring to go to Vegas and then go out to dinner at a chain restaurant and see a movie. However we have been to the movies a total of three times since Ethan was born, so this was a fun treat for us. It was a very enjoyable eavening. After the movie we went back to our hotel room and watched TV in bed... another "treat" for us because neither of us want a TV in our bedroom, but we find it fun to watch TV in bed when we stay at a hotel.

We enjoyed staying in bed for as long as we wanted on Saturday, which ended up being 8:30. Ethan is normally up at 6:00, and so that means we are too, so sleeping in is a huge treat these days. It was so nice to just lounge aroudn in our hotel room, drink coffee, eat breakfast and relax.

We headed out to the pool around 10:00 and oh my was the weather perfect. Usually when we are in vegas in the summer it is roasting hot and over 100 degrees. This weekend it was only in the 80s.... perfect! We relaxed by the pool, read our magazines, and took severl laps around the lazy river.

Later that afternoon we cleaned up and walked around town. We spent some time shopping and exploring a few casinos. Here is a picture of us in front of the Bellagio. We kept waiting but never did see the water show. Oh well.
One of my favorite parts of the Bellagio is their indoor seasonal gardens. They always have them done so beatuiful and this time was no exception. I don't know why we look like Oompa Loompa's in this picture... we are very orange.
Here I am standing in front of a frog made out of plants.
Here is a ladybug made out of carnations. They also had really beauitful live exotic birds this time.
Saturday night we went out to dinner again, this time it was an Italian restaurant that looked good but ended up being dissapointing. That's always a bummer, but I guess you can't win them all can you? After dinner we spent some time gambling. Neither Matt nor I are huge gamblers as we hate loosing money, but we always spend a little bit of time playing a few slots and some blackjack. We lost money for the first while, and then I went to a Blackjack table and ended up winning back all our money. I like to quit when I'm ahead so we called it a night and went back to our room. We ended up watching a movie in bed.

Sunday we slept in until 9:30... we couldn't beleive it. Blackout shades are so much fun :) We wanted to go out by the pool again but didn't have time since checkout time was 11:00. Neither of us felt like gambling any more so we packed up and headed out. We stopped at the famous Vegas sign on the way out and took a picture in front of it.
We stopped at the outlets at Stateline and shopped for a bit on our way out. Unfortuantely traffic was a bit of a bummer on the way home and it took us an extra hour, but I suppose it could have been worse. We decided to stop at Victoria Gardens for dinner on our way home and enjoyed a declious meal at Lucille's BBQ. It was yummy. We left with lots of leftovers and ended up eating them for dinner tonight as well. Nothing like getting another meal out of your money :) We went to my mom's and picked up Ethan at 7:30 and took him right home to go to bed.

We both missed him and were ready to see him. He did great with both of his grandma's and got very spoiled :) Thank you so much mom and Marlene for letting us have such a wonderful weekend away! We appreciate you both very much.

Lastly here is a picture of my belly from this weekend. I am 25 weeks along now. It's funny because the last time we went to Vegas I was exactly 25 weeks pregnant with Ethan as well.
