Fun in the snow with the Flores'

This morning we awoke to beautiful snow capped mountains and sunshine. We still had snow in our yard and we felt like we were in a mountain town instead of Yucaipa! After five days of storms and being cooped up inside we were very happy to see the sun. the Flores' called us up for a little impromptu visit to the snow. We tried going up to Oak Glen, but the roads were still closed, so instead we went to Wildwood Park, at the top of Yucaipa. It ended up being perfect. There was enough snow to have fun with, but not too much for the boys. Since we don't have boots for Ethan Matt put plastic bags over his socks, then put his shoes on. It worked out and kept his feet dry for the hour we were in the snow. The boys had fun throwing a few snowballs and eating snow, and then going down the slide and landing in the snow. After about an hour Ethan's hands were FROZEN and we'd had about enough, so we headed to the Kopper Kettle for a yummy late breakfast.

It was such a fun morning, and we were all VERY glad to get out of the house after 5 days to spend some time playing outside in the sun.

Don't worry.... it wasn't yellow ;)
Miss Alayna stayed warm and happy in the Baby Bjorn

"What do you want mom? Just let me play and stop asking me to smile!"

We woke up this morning to a winter wonderland... not something that happens often here. We get snow about once a year. It's been going strong all morning. We have at least two inches, maybe three.... a big deal for us :) It's fun to sit inside and watch. Being the California wimps that we are, we don't want to go drive in it, so we're pretty content to just stay at home.

This morning when Ethan woke up and we looked outside he said "Where'd all the grass go?" we got a chuckle out of that :) This is really the first time he's seen snow (that he can remember).

Here is our backyard. Notice the palm trees covered in snow.... not something you see often :)

Alayna's 4 month stats

Today Alayna had her 4 month well baby checkup. She was a trooper and did great. Despite being tired she was happy and smiley at the doctor and nurse. She had to get four shots and during her first two she didn't even flinch, she just kept talking to me. It probably helped that I had given her Tylonol in the waiting room. The third and fourth shots made her cry just a little, but she never screamed and she was quickly over it.

She weighed in at 13.8 lbs. (51st percentile) and was 25 inches long. (85th percentile). The doctor was pleased with her growth and said she is doing well. I asked him if she was big enough to let her cry it out at night and he said to wait until she's at least six months old. I am trying to wean her from her second feeding and just get her down to one feeding a night. Lately she's been spending the second half of the night in her swing. Whatever works right now. I guess we'll work on getting her better habits in a few more months. At least she's a pretty happy baby in general. I think she's pretty darn precious right now :)

Here are a few pictures of her from the past week:

These days she constantly has her hands in her mouth...

Because I haven't done a random post in a while....

I have a few random things to share from the past few days......
  • On Friday I got the kids ready and headed out the door for Tmoms (my bi weekly mom's group). Two of my friends from high school who are interested in joining the group were meeting me there at 8:45 so I made sure to get there on time (not the easiest thing for me these days mind you). I meet up with them in the parking lot and we walk up to the church.... and NO ONE is around. I am super confused. It takes me a while to realize I've gotten the dates wrong and the spring session doesn't even start for TWO MORE WEEKS. UGH! I felt SO bad that I had gotten all messed up. I wasn't the only one though, because Faith was also on her way there. We decided since we were all out and dressed and ready for some fun that we'd head over to the park. We spent two hours at the park and then had lunch at Chick fil et. It turned out to be a fun day and I'm glad we got to at least spend some time out of the house. I'll be good and ready for Tmoms now in two weeks :)
  • My mom came and babysat this past Saturday from 9:00am until 7:00 pm. The hubby and I went to Glen Ivy hot springs all day. Let me just tell you.... it was DIVINE! We relaxed in all the different spas, ate a yummy lunch, layed out for a bit while it was sunny and sipped some wine, and just enjoyed spending the day together. It was very much needed. Thank you SO MUCH mom for babysitting. When we came home she was pretty whupped, but we were very appreciative.
  • The very next evening (Sunday) Matt's parents came over and babysat so that we could go out to dinner. One of Matt's business associates took us out for dinner at a yummy place called Harry's Pacific Grill in Rancho Cucamonga. I had a macadamia nut crusted halibut with vanilla sauce over fried rice. It was delicious and fun to be treated to dinner. Let me just tell you (wow, that's the second time I've said that so far) how grateful I am to have parents nearby who are willing to watch our kids and love on them. It is something I never take for granted.
  • Today was so rainy. It's about time we get some rain around here. While I don't enjoy the rain with a toddler, I know that our region needs it in a bad way, so I'm willing to put up with it. I figured since we were stuck inside that I would be productive and get some much needed cleaning done. I got my whole house cleaned, sans bathrooms. That is no easy task for me these days! It always feels SO NICE when I can sit back and enjoy a clean house. In addition to cleaning I did about 5 loads of laundry. Thankfully the children mostly cooperated, which is what allowed me to get that much accomplished. We only had a few incidents... like when Ethan escaped outside and got soaked while I was trying to mop. At least he had fun playing in the rain, lol. It's supposed to rain the rest of the week, so I'm sure we'll make a trip or two to the McDonalds play yard just to get out of the house.
  • Have you watched The Modern Family? It is hilarious. I'd almost compare it to Arrested Development (a show that used to be one of our favorites, before it got canceled). It's now on our Tivo lineup. It's right up there with our other favorite funny shows.... The Office, 30 Rock, and Community.
  • I'm working on the layout for my 2009 blog book. Blurb automatically puts it into a layout for you, but I like to change things up a bit and customize it. It will be fun to finish it and get my "scrapbook" for 2009.
  • The past two days I've gotten Alayna to take a 3 hour afternoon nap in her swing. Mind you she normally naps only 30 minutes at a time, so this was quite a treat. I put her in the magical sleep suit that my friend Noreen let me borrow and then put her in her swing (something I normally do not do). It's been so nice to have the break, especially today when Ethan also took a three hour nap. The sleep suit doesn't seem to work the same magic at night, as she's still waking up twice to eat. Perhaps I should try putting her in her swing. Anything to get some sleep right?
I can't do a post without pictures, so here are two that I took over a week ago. It was before church on a very warm January day. Alayna looked so cute in her tights and dress. The pictures are horrible quality, but I think the subject is cute :)

My first blog award!

Tawny, Krista and Leighann all nominated me me for this beautiful blog award.

I guess they like my blog :) I feel pretty special. Along with accepting the award, I am supposed to reveal 7 random things about myself to you, and nominate 7 other bloggers for the award. I feel like I always share random things about myself, so I'm kinda digging here for something interesting.
  1. People have always joked that I have ADD. I think there's some truth to that. I can hardly ever focus on just one thing. When I set out to do something, I'm usually doing four other things at once and I often lose track of one of the things that I'm doing. Some call this multitasking... I don't think it's the most efficient way to get things done, but I guess somehow it works for me, lol.
  2. Before I met my husband I had decided (after dating a few people) that I REALLY wanted to marry a man that loved the beach, drank coffee, and was tall (amongst other more important qualities). He met all of those things :) I think that's a pretty random list.
  3. The month before meeting my husband I had sworn off dating for a year. I had just gotten out of bad relationship and was the ripe old age of 17. I figured it would be a good idea if I didn't date anyone my freshman year of college. I would just concentrate on my studies, and hopefully make some friends. The VERY first day of college I met Matt :) 'Nuf said :)
  4. I love scrapbooking but have decided to quit. I think I like my blog books even better (I use to make my blog into a book) I blog WAAAAYYYY more than I would ever scrapbook. My blog is like my journal. Scrapbooking is mostly just a creative outlet for me. I've decided if I actually have some time to do something creative, I'd rather sew. I REALLY like ordering my blog made into a book for each year. I think it is such a cool thing to have, and it's a way for me to look back at life and see all of the pictures I took. I think it will be so fun to look back at how life was with little kids when I am old.
  5. I'm a bit of a foodie. I love to cook GOOD food and I love to eat GOOD food. I could spend hours in the kitchen preparing yummy new recipes from scratch. I love to read cooking magazines and love to look at cooking blogs. However, I've noticed since having two kids I gravitate towards easy. I like to make something in the crockpot one night and have leftovers the next. Leftovers are my friend. I purposely make a lot of one meal just to have leftovers one night of the week (or even two). I like to be able to throw together something really easy because when I need to cook dinner, I guarantee you that is when all hell will break loose. Ethan will be insane, and Alayna will be screaming and needy. That's just life right now. I'll get back to my gourmet days one day soon :)
  6. I am also a bit of a beverage snob. I love coffee, but really only like it black, and it has to be good coffee. We brew a pot of coffee EVERY morning. The only time I haven't loved it was when I was pregnant. I couldn't even stand the smell of it during that time. I actually made Matt brew his coffee outside:) While we're talking about coffee my current favorite drink from Starbucks is a skinny vanilla latte, extra hot in the winter and iced in the summer. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE tea, and drink it iced all summer long. I actually love all kinds of tea. I buy the best loose leaf tea from a website called Adagio Teas. Green tea, black tea, white tea, herbal tea... I love it all.
  7. I love organization and cleanliness, but most of you probably already know that. I guess that doesn't make it all that random. When my house is cleaned and everything is put away, I feel so happy and at peace. Lately I've really had to let some of that go and try to still feel happy when my house is a mess, because with two little ones I just do not have the time or energy to keep it clean. If I did, I'd have to ignore my children and spend most of my time cleaning, and life is too short for that. I figure I'll have plenty of time in the future for a clean house. For now, the one time a month I manage to get it to my standards, oh how I enjoy it.
Okay, that was seven. Not super interesting, but maybe you learned something new about me :)

Now I have to nominate seven people (who haven't already been nominated... whew), so here you go.... I think these seven ladies have beautiful blogs too :)
1. Jolene
2. Christy Harker
3. Crystal
4. Shelly (my Salch)
5. Marissa
6. Patty DeWeerd
7. Kelly Petinak

our new camera

We got a cool new video camera for Christmas. We figured since we take lots of videos these days it would be nicer to have something other than the poor quality videos our little digital camera takes. This isn't anything fancy, but it's small and it takes decent little video clips. Here are two from this week:

This is Alayna on the floor yesterday.... I was amazed at how high she was holding up her head.

The second one is of Ethan in the dog bed. It was close to his nap time and he decided to take a little rest in Cookie's bed :)

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Today I'm feeling tired because I didn't get much sleep last night (I know, what's new right?). Well days like this I have to admit I don't think I'm the greatest mom, or wife, or anything. I was desperate to get a little rest in during nap time today, so I put my toddler down when the baby was ready for her nap because unless I'm holding her, she only sleeps for 30 minutes.

I settle down in my chair and get comfy. The baby falls asleep. I turn on a Tivoed show for a little bit. I think all is good. Then I hear my two year old crying. I ignore it for a bit, but he persists, so I go to check on him

His pants are off. His diaper is off. He's peed all over his bed.

I had set the baby down and of course she wakes up and is screaming while I am trying to take care of Ethan.

I get Ethan cleaned up and put back to bed, where he continues to cry and then finally goes to sleep. Of course I can't get the baby back to sleep. I'm sure by the time I do, Ethan will wake up. No rest for the weary. That's life right?

I came across this on a blog yesterday and I couldn't help but think about it right now:

"A note to all of you parents out there with toddlers wishing they would just grow up already… stop right now. Tiny kids, tiny problems. Big kids, big problems."

One day I won't be thinking about diapers or nap time or my stupid insomnia... it will be whole other set of issues. I guess that's life huh? Will I look back at these days and think how much easier they were than whatever I am to face in the future? Perhaps. I'll look back at pictures like the one below with a pang of nostalgia and think of "the good ol' days" when my problems were so much simpler :)

Comparing the two kids....

I dug up the pictures of Ethan when he was the same age that Alayna is now. I think he was quite a bit chubbier than her... he had fatter cheeks and hands :) One thing is for sure... he slept way better at night!!!! :) I think they look alike... but way different at the same time.

Alayna at 4 months

Today our sweet little girl is four months old. I think time goes by faster with the second baby. She's definitely growing. She still does not sleep through the night... ***Sigh***. She has nights that are better than other nights, but she always wakes up to eat. Sometimes she goes 4 hours, other times she goes 6, really she's unpredictable. One of these days we'll get there (I hope). I hate the whole crying it out thing, but if she doesn't start sleeping in another month or two we'll probably have to do that. I was just hoping it would happen on its own. Perhaps it will soon.
  • She started to giggle this month, which melts my heart. I can't get enough of that :)
  • She's doing the whole thirty minute nap thing, just like her brother did (only HE slept through the night, so I didn't mind as much). I lay her down in her bed awake, she falls asleep on her own, and then thirty minutes later she's wide awake. I usually let her be for a while, and she'll talk and play with her hands for about 20 more minutes, but she doesn't go back to sleep. After she's been awake about 60-90 minutes, she's ready for another cat nap. The one time she will sleep a long time, is if I'm holding her. Usually when I put Ethan down I snuggle with her and relax and watch some Tivo, and then she'll sleep the entire time he naps (2-3 hours). I'm sure it's just a phase (Ethan did it from 3-6 months).

  • Just the other day we got out the exersaucer and Alayna likes it. She can only handle it for short periods of time right now, but it's nice to have another place to set her where she'll be entertained.
  • Her eyes seem to be getting darker... closer to a brownish hazel color. I'm thinking she just might end up with brown hair too... it doesn't really seem to be getting lighter. It's so funny to have a blue eyed toe headed and then a kid with brown hair and brown eyes.
  • She only nurses at night. During the day I have to pump and give her bottles. She takes formula too, which is nice when we're out and I can't really pump. She just WILL NOT nurse. At least she does at night.

She LOVES her hands right now and almost always has them in her mouth :)

We love our little girl :)

Laying on the floor

I took these pictures last week. I was trying to hang up some clothes in the kids' bedroom and so I layed Alayna on the floor. Ethan was cute and insisted on laying next to her, so I snapped a few pictures of them.
